Dave Culeton tossed a three-hit shutout over Grove City in game one of a twinbill at Bearcat Ballfield, as the Bearcats posted a 2-0 victory in before falling 3-2 in the second game.
In game one,
Eddie Kilkeary provided the big hit of the game, a standup triple in the second inning. Â He scored on a groundout by
Bobby Finn to give SVC the lead. Â SVC added an insurance run in the 6th, when
Chris Winkler singled just inside the right field line with one out. Â He stole second, then advanced on a balk. Â He then scored on a flare single by
Greg Martin that just stayed fair inside the left field line.
It was all Culeton would need, as he was strong from start to finish. Â He began the game with back-to-back strikeouts, both on called third strikes, and ended the game the same way. Â He walked one and struck out five on the afternoon, giving up just one bunt single and two singles through the right side.
Starter
Jimmy Malone got into trouble in the top of the first for the Bearcats, yielding a single and walking four runners. Â The visitors tallied two runs in the inning to take the early lead.
Kilkeary cut the lead in half in the bottom of the second, with a solo home run to left. Â It was his fifth for the year, tying him for the team lead with Martin.
The game stayed that way until the fifth inning, when Matt Waugaman singled to lead off for the Wolverines, then moved to second on a groundout to first. Â Matt Dayton then hit a bloop single to left field. Â Waugaman was running as soon as the ball was hit, and made it home to give the visitors an insurance run.
It was a run they would need, as the Bearcats rallied with two outs in the bottom of the inning. Â Winkler singled to the opposite field, followed by a
TJ Kuny single to center that moved Winkler to second. Â Martin then singled to left, plating Winkler to cut the margin to 3-2, but the Bearcats stranded a pair of runners.
Dylan Pietrantoni relieved Malone in the 7th and pitched a 1-2-3 inning, but the Bearcats were unable to score in the bottom of the inning.
Malone (4-2) suffered the loss, working six innings and striking out four. Â Bini (4-1) went the distance for Grove City, walking none and striking out seven. Â Kuny had a pair of hits for the Bearcats.
Saint Vincent is now 11-13 overall, 6-6 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference. Â Grove City is 11-14, 8-7 in the PAC. Â Saint Vincent returns to action on Wednesday (April 18), traveling to Greenville for a conference doubleheader at Thiel College. Â
