The SVC women's bowling team advanced to the title match of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Championships with a 2-1 comeback victory over Medaille College.
In the opening game of the mega-match format, the Bearcats jumped to an early lead and never looked back, going on to win by a score of 971-818.Â
Jackie Koehler led the team with a 206 game, while
Mercedes Belch added a 203, and
Olivia Emmonds finished with a 200.
Up next was a five-game Baker team series, where total pins would decide the winner. Medaille took advantage of several SVC mistake to win the first game 190-139, opening a 51-pin lead. The Bearcats came back with two good games - 198 and 191 - but Medaille was stronger, shooting 218-248. By the end of the series, Medaille had posted a 1012 total, while the Bearcats finished at 878.
With the match tied at one point each, the tiebreaker was a best-of-7 Baker team game series. Medaille won the first game, and the Bearcats were on the verge of losing game two. However, senior
Jessica Guesman, needing two strikes to give the Bearcats the win, came through in the clutch, striking twice to lift SVC to a 158-153 victory, tying the series at 1-1.
Medaille bounced right back, winning the next two games by scores of 192-157 and 175-155, giving the Mavericks a 3-1 advantage, one game away from the win. SVC made several lineup changes and fought back to win the next game, 191-148, to stay alive. Three straight strikes by
Sabine Strickland,
Kaylea Wright an
Abby Kyle keyed the win.
Down 3-2, the Bearcats finished game six with a solid 195 game, while Medaille shot a 162, tying the series at 3-3 and setting up the deciding game.
The Bearcats left back-to-back splits in frames two and three, falling behind by 5 pins. Medaille also struggled to make spares, and the lead bounced back and forth over the next several frames. A spare by Kyle in the 8th gave SVC a 6-pin lead, and Emmonds followed with a spare in the 9th. Medaille struck in the 9th frame and had a chance to shut out the Bearcats, but a 10th frame split gave SVC an opportunity to win. Guesman stepped up and threw three strikes in the 10th for Saint Vincent, giving the Bearcats a 4-3 win in the best-of-7, and the 2-1 victory overall.
With the win, Saint Vincent is now 33-8 on the season. The team will face the winner of Medaille/Pitt-Bradford in the Championship match on Sunday at 9:30AM at SIms Lanes in Beaver Falls. In the double-elimination format, SVC needs one win to capture the conference championship while their opponent will need to win twice. The winner advances to the NCAA National Tournament.
