HIRAM, Ohio (Jan. 19) – The Saint Vincent College men's wrestling team closed its evening with nine straight wins, including eight by bonus points, to earn a rousing 46-3 victory in a non-conference dual at Hiram College.
Sean Cain earned Saint Vincent's first victory, taking the 133 match by forfeit to give the Bearcats a 6-3 lead.
Rookie
Ryan Yocum would then increase the SVC advantage to 10-3 with a 16-8 major decision victory over Nathan Westinghouse in the 141-pound match, before classmate
Liam Flanigan cruised to a 15-0 technical fall over Ashton Kauf in the 149-pound bout to up the SVC advantage to 15-3.
After
Charlie Mesich earned a forfeit win at 157 pounds,
Chase Brandebura (165 pounds) and
Logan Bechtold (174) followed with technical fall victories by identical scores of 20-4 to push the Bearcat lead to 31-3.
Colin Keller earned his first collegiate victory at the 184-pound match by a 6-0 forfeit, before
Dakota McDermott earned a gritty 2-0 decision at 197 pounds over Zach Harper to make the match score 40-6.
Senior
Jake Beistel then closed out the evening in fine fashion, improving to 8-1 on the season by pinning Edward Powers in 1:08, Beistel's fifth win by fall this season.
The Bearcats will now have a nearly two-week respite before returning to action on Thursday, Feb. 1, when they welcome defending Presidents' Athletic Conference co-champion Thiel College to the Robert S. Carey Center for a 7 p.m. fray. Prior to the final home match of the season for Saint Vincent, the team will recognize its seniors with a traditional pre-match senior night ceremony.
