LATROBE, Pa. (Feb. 1) – The Saint Vincent College wrestling team won nine of 10 weight classes enroute to a 38-6 victory over defending co-Presidents' Athletic Conference champ Thiel College on Senior Night in front of a capacity crowd in the Robert S. Carey Student Center.
The Bearcats (4-7, 2-1 PAC) opened the night by rattling off seven straight wins over the Tomcats (4-1, 2-1 PAC), including five by bonus points, to cruise to the conference win.
Freshman
Sean Cain began the evening by earning his 12th win of the season with a 10-4 decision over Conner Smalls in the 125-pound match, before sophomore
Kyle McCollum earned SVC's first bonus point victory with a 19-8 major decision at 133 pounds over Evan Whiteside to improve to 5-1 on the season.
At 141 pounds, freshman
Tyler Debnar rolled to a 17-0 technical fall over Dreyvin Livingston to put the Bearcats up 12-0, and classmate
Liam Flanigan followed with a 12-0 win over Jacob Potts at 149 pounds, the first major decision of his career.
The Bearcats made it 22-0 when
Charlie Mesich notched his fourth pin of the season, downing Austin Parkers in 43 seconds in the 157-pound match.
After freshman 165-pounder
Chase Brandebura picked up his 12th victory with a 19-2 technical fall over Dominic Hartman,
Logan Bechtold outlasted Frank Gill for a 7-3 decision at 174 pounds to push the SVC lead to 30-0.
The Tomcats claimed their sole win of the evening with a pin at 184 pounds, but the Bearcats would then close the evening by taking the final two matches.
At 197 pounds, freshman
Dakota McDermott picked up his first career technical fall with a 19-1 win over Howie Congdon, and then 285-pounder
Jake Beistel wrapped up his Senior Night with a 3-2 decision over Seth Phillips to improve to 9-1 on the season and close out the 38-6 victory.
Saint Vincent also earned a pair of pins in exhibition matches, with 133-pounder
Ryan Yocum downing Hunter Crouse in 3:41, and
Bradley Miller pinning Jacob Traupman in 4:25 in a 285-pound matchup.
Prior to the match, Beistel and his senior classmates,
Jimmy Bendtsen and
Nick Carter, were recognized for their contributions to the re-born Bearcats wrestling program.
The Bearcats will now have a two-day respite before returning to action on Sunday, Feb. 4, traveling south for a 1 p.m. dual at Division-II Fairmont State University.
