BOX SCORE
The Bearcat baseball team dropped its second game in as many days, falling 11-4 on the road to Penn State-Altoona.
The Lions jumped out to an 8-0 lead after four innings of play, and the early deficit was too much for Saint Vincent to overcome, as the Bearcats fell to 4-8 on the year.
PSU-Altoona jumped to an early 4-0 lead after one inning of play, with the big blow a three-run home run from John Schall. The Lions then upped their advantage to 5-0 in the second inning, taking advantage of a pair of SVC passed balls to score an unearned run, before sending eight men to the plate in the fourth, scoring three runs on two hits (both doubles) and an error to make the score 8-0.
The Bearcats would finally get on the board in the top of the sixth.
AJ Kavinsky walked to start the frame, moving to second on a
Brad Burkardt single. Following a fielder's choice off the bat of
Joe Aul,
Zack Galasso followed with a double to left to score Kavinsky. Aul would then score on a sacrifice fly to
Mike Hustava, cutting the Lions' lead to 8-2.
Altoona would put the game away over the next two frames, scoring twice in the sixth and once in the seventh to go in front 11-2. SVC closed the scoring with two runs in the top of the eighth. Galasso reached on an error before
Zach Bush singled, and then a ball off the bat of
Steven Bayko was misplayed in the outfield, scoring both Galasso and Bush.
Jeff Bugajski started for SVC and was saddled with the loss, working 3.2 innings and allowing eight runs (five earned) on four hits and three walks. A total of five Bearcat hurlers were used, with
Mike Tedesco throwing a scoreless inning-and-a-third, and
Max Henry hurling a perfect eighth inning, striking out the side.
Offensively, the Bearcats mustered just six hits, led by a 3-for-5 showing from Burkardt, while Galasso finished the day 2-for-4 at the dish.
Trevor Conner started and worked five innings to earn the win for PSU-Altoona (9-4), allowing just two hits while striking out four. The Lions racked 11 hits on the afternoon, with Luzier, Schall, Jimmy Baum, and Tyler Stiffler each recording two apiece. Luzier and Schall each homered and doubled, while Baum doubled and scored three runs.
The Bearcats will now look to snap their two-game losing skid on Tuesday, hosting Pitt-Greensburg in a single, nine-inning game at Bearcat Ballfield beginning at 3pm.
