The Wartburg College (Iowa) Knights outslugged the Bearcats in Winter Haven, Florida, by a score of 22-13.
SVC got off to a good start, with
Zach Galasso hitting a solo home run in the top of the first to put the Bearcats in front, 1-0.
However, Wartburg, a team loaded with several Division I transfers from the now-defunct program at Northern Iowa, scored 8 runs in the bottom of the first, including a grand slam by Ryan Doty out of the #9 slot in the batting order.
The Bearcats refused to give up, scoring a pair of runs in the second inning, then adding two more in the third.
In the top of the seventh, down 14-7, SVC's
Mike Hustava hit a grand slam that brought the team back within three, 14-11, but it was as close as the team could get. The Knights added six more runs in the bottom of the seventh, eventually pulling away to a 22-13 slugfest victory.
Brad Burkardt, Galasso and Hustava each had three hits for the Bearcats (3-3). The team will wrap up its Spring Break trip to Florida on Saturday with a 9AM game against the Rochester Institute of Technology.
