BOX SCORE - GAME THREE
The Bearcats struggled against nationally ranked Thomas More in a rare tripleheader in Crestview Hills, Kentucky. SVC lost game one by a 12-1 score, then dropped the second game 11-1. Game three brought more of the same, as SVC fell by a score of 17-3.
Erik Fichter (1-2) started on the mound and took the loss in game one for the Bearcats. A home run by
Jack Shaffer accounted for the lone SVC tally, and
Joe Aul was the only Bearcat with two hits (2-for-3).
In game two, SVC managed just one hit, a pinch-hit, RBI single in the final inning by
Gary Gerhardt in his first plate appearance of the season. Gerhardt's single scored Aul, who had reached on an error. Jake Samad earned the win, coming within one out of a no-hitter for the 23rd-ranked Saints.
Jeremy Mains started and took the loss for SVC in game two.
In game three, the Saints jumped to an early 10-run lead off SVC starter
Jeff Bugajski (2-4) and the Bearcats never recovered. Offensively,
Brad Burkardt was 2-for-3 with a double and triple.
Mike Hustava was 1-3 with 2 runs batted in, and Gerhardt hit a solo home run.
Eric Kubeja, making his first collegiate start behind the plate, doubled.
Saint Vincent is now 0-7 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference, while Thomas More improves to 8-2.
In other baseball news, the doubleheader between Saint Vincent and Washington & Jefferson College has been moved once again. It will now take place on Tuesday at 1PM at Bearcat Ballfield. The Bearcats were originally slated to host Franciscan University that day, but that game has been postponed in favor of the conference doubleheader.
