Bearcats win in West Virginia

Box Score

The Saint Vincent baseball team picked up its second conference win of the season, downing the Bethany Bison by a score of 8-5 in West Virginia.

The Bearcats jumped to the early 2-0 lead in the top of the first. After Brad Burkardt and Joe Aul singled, a fielding error brought home both runs, and SVC never looked back.

In the second, Grant Krally, Joey Fearer and AJ Kavinsky all singled to load the bases, then a groundout by Burkardt scored Krally to make it 3-0. Next, Aul hit a 2-run single that put the visiting Bearcats in front by five runs.

After the Bison got a run back in the bottom of the second, Saint Vincent added another run in the top of the fourth. Kavinsky hit a two-out double down the line in left field, then scored on a single by Burkardt to make it 6-1.

In the fifth, with the score 6-2, an RBI single by Erik Fichter drove home Mike Hustava, who had reached on an error, with the Bearcats' seventh run.

The Bison managed to get three runs back in the bottom of the 6th, but SVC got some insurance in the ninth off the bat of Zack Galasso, who hit his fourth home run of the season, a solo shot, to make the score 8-5.

Gary Gerhardt went the distance for SVC, scattering eleven hits and giving up four earned runs while walking two and striking out ten.

Offensively, Kavinsky was 3-for-5 with two stolen bases and scored twice, while Burkardt and Aul each went 2-5 with 2 runs batted in.

The Bearcats are now 2-11 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (10-19 overall), and will have the holiday weekend off before returning to action with a home doubleheader against Bethany on Monday at 1PM at Bearcat Ballfield.
