Trailing 5-1 in the fourth inning, the Bearcat baseball team used a pair of late-inning home runs to come back and defeat Franciscan University 7-5 in the opening end of a doubleheader in Steubenville, OH. Saint Vincent then won game two 10-2, with
Mike Tedesco tossing a three-hitter.
In the opener,
Joey Fearer's first collegiate home run tied the game for the Bearcats in the sixth inning, before
Grant Krally's two-run blast in the top of the seventh sealed the victory for Saint Vincent.
The Bearcats got on the first in the opener, manufacturing an unearned run.
AJ Kavinsky led off the game with a walk, stole second base, and advanced to third on a groundout from
Brad Burkardt.
Zack Galasso, the next hitter, reached on an error, plating Kavinsky, and putting the Bearcats in front early.
The teams would then share goose eggs over the next two frames, before Franciscan responded in the bottom of the third, sending eight men to the plate and scoring five runs, including a pair of unearned tallies, to jump in front 5-1.
Saint Vincent then began to chip away.
Joe Aul led off the fourth with a triple, and scored two batters later on a single from
Zach Bush. Three batters later, Bush was plated on a Kavinsky single, making the score 5-3. The Bearcats pulled to within one in the fifth, after Aul, who singled to lead off, scored on a double from Krally.
Meanwhile,
Max Henry, on in relief of starter
Jeremy Mains, kept the Barons at bay, allowing just two base runners and striking out four between the fourth and sixth innings. Fearer's shot to lead off the sixth inning tied the game at 5-all, and the Bearcats then completed the comeback in the top of the seventh.
Erik Fichter began the frame with a single, and scored on Krally's homer to put SVC back in front 7-5.
Henry retired the side in order in the bottom of the seventh, earning his second win in four days, going 4 2/3 innings and allowing two hits and one walk with five strikeouts.
The Bearcats out-hit the Barons 11-7 for the game, with Fearer going 3-for-4, Krally 2-for-3, and Aul 2-for-4.
In game two, Saint Vincent again got off to a strong start, sending eight men to the plate in the top of the first to score three runs on two hits, while also taking advantage of four Franciscan errors. Bush had a two-run single in the frame, while
Sean Stiffey posted a sacrifice fly.
The visitors increased the lead to 4-0 in the third, as
Zack Galasso doubled to lead off the inning and scored on Krally's second two-run homer of the afternoon, before the Bearcats effectively put the game away with a four-run fourth.
Kevin Mitrisin and
Eric Kubeja led off with back-to-back singles, before Burkardt came through with an RBI double. Kubeja came around on an RBI groundout from Stiffey, while Burkardt scored on a grounder by Galasso, making the score 8-0.
Saint Vincent scored two more times in the top of the seventh, with
Nick Hogue belting an RBI double and
Anthony Williams posting an RBI single to put the visitors on top 10-0.
Franciscan managed its lone offense of the day off of Bearcat starter
Mike Tedesco with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Tedesco worked all seven innings, facing just three batters over the minimum, allowing two unearned runs on three hits with five strikeouts.
Offensively, SVC posted 12 hits, with 10 different players recording at least one. Galasso and Burkardt both went 2-for-4 to lead the charge.
The two wins improve the Bearcats' record to 15-20 on the year, and the team will return to action on Saturday afternoon, hosting non-conference foe LaRoche College for a 1PM Senior Day single, nine-inning affair.
