The Bearcat baseball team captured game one of a Mother's Day doubleheader at Waynesburg by a score of 10-4 before ending the season with an 18-5 loss in game two.
In the opener, the Bearcats and Yellow Jackets were tied at 1-all after the first inning, before the Saint Vincent offense came to life in the second, sending nine men to the plate and scoring six runs on
five hits.
Nolan Russell plated the Bearcats' first run of the frame with an RBI single, before
Brad Burkardt followed with a two-run single and
Joe Aul a two-run double.
Waynesburg countered with three runs between the third and fifth innings while holding SVC scoreless, but the Bearcats added some insurance in the top of the seventh.
Nick LoNigro, pinch running for
Grant Krally who led off the inning with a double, was plated after
Erik Fichter reached on an error. The Bearcats proceeded to load the bases, and then Burkardt belted his second two-run single of the afternoon to close out the day's scoring, giving the Bearcats the 10-4 win.
Mike Tedesco started on the mound for SVC and improved to 2-1 on the year, going five innings and allowing four runs on four hits with four strikeouts.
Jeff Bugajski threw two perfect innings in relief, striking out one.
Burkardt went 3-for-5 with four RBIs to lead an SVC offense that tallied 13 hits. Aul went 3-for-5 with three RBIs, and
Mike Hustava 2-for-5, while Russell and
AJ Kavinsky each scored two runs.
In the nightcap, the Bearcat offense picked up right where it left off in game one, scoring four runs in the top of the first. The visitors sent eight men to the plate, with
Nick Hogue tallying a two-run single and
Zach Bush a one-run one-base hit.
Waynesburg cut the deficit to 4-3 after four innings, but the Bearcats added what looked to be an insurance tally in the top of the fifth, when
Jack Shaffer led off by reaching on a two-base error, and scored on a Fichter single, to make the score 5-3.
The Yellow Jackets, however, put the game away in a big way, scoring 15 runs on 10 hits, including three home runs and two doubles, over the fifth and sixth to seal the season-ending win.
Waynesburg out-hit SVC 20-7 in the nightcap, with Shaffer the lone Bearcat to record multiple hits, going 2-for-4.
Paul Kubeja started on the mound for SVC and took a no-decision, giving up five runs in four innings.
Darren Smith took the loss, giving up three runs on three hits in 2/3 of an inning.
With the split, Saint Vincent ends the season with a record of 6-15 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference, 16-24 overall, while Waynesburg finished 14-24/9-12.
