HAMPTON, Va. (Mar. 17) - Junior
Jared Haller threw a complete-game shutout as the Bearcats won the first game of a doubleheader against the Newport News Apprentice School, 2-0, before dropping the nightcap, 5-2.
With the split, the Saint Vincent baseball team moves to 8-2 on the season after winning two of three games on its trip to Virginia. It marks the Bearcats' best start since beginning the 2010 campaign 9-2. The Apprentice School moves to 12-9 on the season.
Haller threw a gem in the first game, going the full 7.0 innings and scattering seven hits and striking out four with no walks. Only two Builders advanced to third base as Haller tossed the first shutout of the season for SVC.
In the second inning the Bearcats scored the eventual winning run on an RBI single to left center by sophomore
Joey Fearer. The inning started when senior first baseman
Mike Hustava drew his team-leading seventh walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior designated hitter
Grant Krally.
Junior infielder
Zach Bush hit a one-out double to left center and scored on an RBI single by junior right fielder
Andrew Kozusko as the Bearcats added an insurance run in the fifth inning.
In the second game, junior
Gary Gerhardt suffered the loss after allowing all five runs (three earned) in a complete game. He struck out seven and walked one while giving up nine hits.
The Builders scored two runs in the bottom of the first before junior
Alonzo Vazquez cut the lead in half with an RBI triple that drove in senior center fielder
Zack Galasso who walked to lead off the frame.
In the sixth SVC made it a 5-2 game when Kozusko walked to lead off and scored on a two-out single by Hustava.
The Bearcats have their home opener on Tuesday, Mar. 20 when they host Penn State-Altoona in a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
