The Bearcats opened the home portion of the 2012 schedule with a pair of wins over visiting Penn State-Altoona. Final scores were 8-2 and 6-3.
Mike Tedesco worked 6.2 innings in game one, improving to 2-0 on the season. He gave up just one run, walked two and struck out four.
He received offensive support from
Zack Galasso, who drove home the first two runs of the game. In the bottom of the third, Galasso broke a scoreless tie with a two-out single that scored
Joey Fearer, who reached on a walk to open the inning.
In the fifth,
Brad Burkardt singled to open the inning, then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Zach Bush. With two outs, Galasso started things rolling for the Bearcats with an RBI double that made it 2-0. Galasso then scored on a single by
Mike Hustava. In all, nine straight Bearcats reached base - including three that were hit by pitches - as part of a 7-run inning.
Erik Fichter delivered a two-run single as part of the inning and later stole home.
Alex Kozusko came on in relief and got the final out of the game to seal the victory for SVC.
Paul Kubeja started on the hill in game two for the Bearcats, and the Lions managed to score an unearned run in the top of the first to take the lead. Saint Vincent came right back, tying the game in the bottom of the first thanks to an RBI single by
Grant Krally.
After Altoona took a 2-1 edge in the second, Saint Vincent once again tied the game in the bottom of the third. After Hustava singled and Krally was hit by a pitch,
Andrew Kozusko reached on an error, scoring Hustava.
An inning later, Fearer walked to lead off, then moved to second on a Burkardt infield single. Galasso then delivered the key hit, a two-run triple that would prove to be the game-winner.
The Bearcats picked up a pair of insurance runs in the fifth, with Fearer supplying a run-scoring double. He later stole home as part of a delayed double steal, and the Bearcats also took advantage of three Lion errors in the inning.
Kubeja (1-0) went the distance, giving up just two earned runs, walking two and striking out six.
With the doubleheader sweep, Saint Vincent is off to a 10-2 start on the season, their best in more than a decade. In both 2003 and 2010, the team started 9-2.
Conference play starts Friday for the Bearcats, with a 4PM game at Geneva College.
