Baseball drops action-packed game at Geneva, 21-20

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. (Mar. 26) - After falling behind 13-2 in the first inning, the Bearcats rallied to tie the score twice, but Geneva won the game in the bottom of the ninth, 21-20, in Presidents' Athletic Conference action.

With the loss, the Bearcats fall to 11-4 on the season and 1-2 in PAC play. With the win, the Golden Tornadoes improve to 10-8 on the season and 4-2 in PAC action.

SVC took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning after senior first baseman Mike Hustava hit a two-run single to give the guests the early lead. Geneva exploded for 13 runs in the bottom half of the inning, highlighted by a grand slam and three-run homer.

The Bearcats, who scored at least one run in every inning, scored four runs in each of the second and third innings before adding two more runs in the fourth frame. After four innings, the score was 15-14 Geneva.

Heading into the top of the eighth, SVC trailed, 20-17, but the Bearcats scored two runs in the top of the eighth on RBI singles by junior Andrew Kozusko and senior Zack Galasso.

In the top of the ninth inning, trailing 20-19, Junior Alonzo Vazquez led off with a double and was pinch-run for by junior Sean Stiffey. After back-to-back groundouts, sophomore Joey Fearer reached on an error that scored Stiffey and tied the game, 20-20.

Geneva responded with a run in the bottom of the ninth, on a bases-loaded walk to win the game, 21-20.

Junior Gary Gerhardt took the loss in relief for SVC. In all, five pitchers threw for the Bearcats and four players took the mound for the Golden Tornadoes. The two teams combined for 41 runs, 35 hits and eight errors.

SVC is right back at it tomorrow, Tuesday, Mar. 27, hosting Waynesburg in a PAC doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
