An 8th inning home run proved costly to the Bearcats, as they lost to Washington & Jefferson by a score of 3-2.
Gary Gerhardt for Saint Vincent went the distance, giving up 10 hits and just three runs, but W&J's Eddie Nogay was equally solid on the hill, working into the 7th and taking a no-decision. Mark Rizzo picked up the win in relief.
The game was scoreless into the bottom of the fourth, when
Andrew Kozusko doubled to the fence in left center to lead off. He then moved to third on a groundout by
Zack Galasso, and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Mike Hustava.
In the fifth,
Steve Bayko led off with a single for SVC, then moved to second one out later when
Joey Fearer reached on an error. Two batters later,
Brad Burkardt singled to left. Bayko scored when the throw went toward the Bearcat dugout. Fearer also attempted to score but was thrown out at the plate to end the inning with the score 2-0.
A two-run double by Tyler Schultz in the top of the seventh tied the game, and then in the bottom of the 8th, Josh Staniscia hit a home run over the fence in left field that would prove to be the game-winner.
Gerhardt struck out seven on the day and falls to 1-3 with the hard-luck loss. Rizzo worked 2.1 innings of hitless relief and got the win for W&J (13-2, 4-1 PAC). Galasso and Bayko each had two hits for the Bearcats (14-6, 4-4 PAC).
Saint Vincent returns to action on Tuesday at Waynesburg for a single game at 3PM.
