BETHANY, W.Va. (Apr. 21) - Senior outfielder
Zack Galasso finished 4-for-4 with four RBI and broke the single-season school record with his 14th double of the season as the Bearcats posted a 9-3 victory at Bethany in Presidents' Athletic Conference action.
The second game of the doubleheader was postponed until tomorrow and moved to Latrobe. The Bearcats and Bison will now play one seven-inning game beginning at 1 p.m., with Bethany serving as the home team. Following the seven-inning game, the two teams will play a nine-inning game as the Bearcats will be the home team.
With the win, the Bearcats improve to 20-11 on the season and 10-8 in league play. With the win and a win by Thomas More, the Saint Vincent baseball team remains in a tie for third place with the Saints. Bethany drops to 11-18 this year with a 5-11 record in the PAC.
The Bison struck first with a pair of runs (one earned) in the bottom of the second inning against SVC starter junior
Gary Gerhardt. The Bearcats rallied with a three spot in the top of the third. Senior
Mike Hustava led off with a walk and sophomore
AJ Kavinsky singled through the left side. After a walk to sophomore
Joey Fearer loaded the bases, junior
Brad Burkardt drove in a run on an RBI fielder's choice. Galasso then delivered a two-run single to give SVC the lead, 3-2.
The Bearcats struck again for a pair of runs in the fifth inning. After Kavinsky walked to lead off the inning and Burkardt singled down the right-field line, Galasso notched his record-setting double and drove home both runners, 5-2.
A Bethany run in the bottom of the fifth inning cut the lead to 5-3, but SVC responded with four runs in the top of the seventh.
Galasso led off with a single, advanced to third on a single by junior
Andrew Kozusko and scored on an RBI single by junior
Grant Krally. Hustava followed that up with an RBI single of his own which led to a pitching change for the Bison. An RBI single by junior
Nick Beamenderfer, who was playing in his first game after missing more than two weeks with an injury, brought home the third run of the inning and Kavinsky capped off the frame with an RBI double to right center.
Gerhardt (2-5) went the distance, scattering seven hits and two walks while allowing three runs (two earned) and striking out two.
As a team, SVC tallied 12 hits on the day. Galasso led the way with his 4-for-4 performance while contributing a double, four RBI and scoring a run. Kavinsky finished 2-for-3 with a walk,a double, two runs scored and an RBI. Beamenderfer contributed two hits and an RBI in his first game since April 5.
The two teams will complete the season series tomorrow, Sunday, April 22, with a pair of games at Bearcat Ballfield starting at 1 p.m.
