Bethany takes two games from Saint Vincent

BOX SCORE - GAME ONE (SEVEN INNINGS)

BOX SCORE - GAME TWO (NINE INNINGS)

LATROBE (Apr. 22) - The Saint Vincent and Bethany baseball teams completed their doubleheader from Saturday and played the regularly scheduled nine inning game at Bearcat Ballfield with the Bison capturing both wins, 11-5 and 4-2.

With the pair off losses, the Bearcats fall to 10-10 in Presidents' Athletic Conference contests and 20-13 on the 2012 season. The Bison improve to 7-11 in league games and 13-18 overall.

The first game started off with SVC scoring three runs in the top of the first game while serving as the home team as part of the continuation of Saturday's doubleheader. With two outs, junior Brad Burkardt singled to right field and senior Zack Galasso walked. Both players came in to score on a double by senior Erik Fichter, who would later score on a single by junior Grant Krally.

Bethany answered back with three runs in the bottom of the inning off of SVC starter senior Paul Kubeja. SVC responded with one run in the second inning on a sacrifice fly by Galasso following three-straight singles by sophomore AJ Kavinsky, junior Nick Beamenderfer and Burkardt.

A Bison run in the bottom of the inning tied the game, 4-4. Bethany then scored three runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings and one run in the sixth inning to open up an 11-4 lead.

In the top of the seventh, the Bearcats loaded the bases with one out on a double by Galasso and consecutive hit-by-pitches to junior Andrew Kozusko and Krally, but an RBI fielder's choice by senior Jack Shaffer was the only run SVC could add in the 11-5 loss.

Kubeja suffered the loss, his first of the season, after working the first 3.2 innings and yielding 10 hits and seven runs (five earned). Sophomore Alex Kozusko (1.1 innings) and senior Mike Tedesco (1.0 inning) worked the final 2.1 innings out of the bullpen for SVC combining to allow four hits and four runs (two earned).

In the second game, Bethany scored two runs in the top of the second inning before SVC responded with a run in the bottom of the third on an RBI ground out by Burkardt.

The Bison posted two more runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 4-1 lead but an RBI ground out by senior Steve Bayko cut the margin to 4-2.

In the bottom of the ninth, SVC had the tying run on base with one out following back-to-back singles by sophomore Joey Fearer and Burkardt, but Bethany reliever Brad Kubis was able to get the next two batters to strike out to earn his league-leading fifth save of the season.

Junior Jared Haller took the loss for SVC, his second of the season, to drop to 7-2 on the year. He worked his team-leading sixth complete game of the year and scattered seven hits and four runs (three earned) with eight strikeouts and no walks. He finished with five 1-2-3 innings and faced just eight batters over the minimum.

Saint Vincent is scheduled to return to the field on Wednesday, Apr. 25, with a nine-inning game at home against Westminster to complete the season series with the Titans. Game time is 3 p.m.
