SVC falls to defending National Champion Marietta

MARIETTA, Ohio (Apr. 26) - The Saint Vincent baseball team fell to the defending NCAA Division III National Champion and current No. 1-ranked Marietta, 15-2, in a non-conference game at Don Schaly Stadium.

With the loss, the Bearcats fall to 20-14 on the season. Marietta, who entered the game ranked No. 1 by both Collegiate Baseball and the National College Baseball Writers Association, improves to 27-5 after winning the national title last season.

After a scoreless first inning, Marietta picked up three runs in the bottom of the second inning off of Bearcat starter Jeremy Mains. The Pioneers exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the third inning, highlighted by a two-run homer.

The hosts added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth before SVC got on the board with a run in the top of the sixth inning. Junior Grant Krally led off with a double down the left-field line and scored on an RBI single by classmate Nick Beamenderfer.

Marietta added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 15-1 lead. SVC added a run in the top of the eighth inning after junior Nolan Russell reached on an error and came in to score on an RBI ground out by sophomore AJ Kavinsky.

Mains (4-4) suffered the loss, tossing 2.2 innings and yielding 10 hits and nine runs (six earned). Junior Gary Gerhardt came on in relief and went 1.1 innings, allowing five hits and three runs (one earned). Sophomore Alex Kozusko went 3.0 innings, scattering seven hits and three runs (all earned). Junior Jared Haller pitched the final 1.0 inning without allowing a hit and recording two strikeouts.

SVC returns to action on Saturday, Apr. 28 with a non-conference doubleheader against Penn State-Behrend at Bearcat Ballfield, scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
