LATROBE (Apr. 28) - The clouds held out long enough for the Bearcats to get in two games against visiting Penn State Behrend, winning the first game, 6-5, before losing the night cap, 9-2, in non-conference action at Bearcat Ballfield.

With the split, the Bearcats improve to 21-15 this season while Behrend moves to 25-11-1.

After the Lions scored a run in the top of the first inning, the Bearcats took the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second. Junior Grant Krally and seniors Jack Shaffer and Steve Bayko led off with back-to-back-to-back singles before sophomore Joey Fearer notched a two-run single to left center.

The Lions tied the game with a run in the bottom of the third before SVC added two runs in the bottom of the inning. With one out, Krally singled, Shaffer walked and Bayko posted an RBI single. Fearer drove home the second run with an infield single, 4-2.

After Behrend posted two runs in the top of the fourth to tie the game once again, SVC once again scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth to take 6-4 lead. Senior Zack Galasso led off with a single through the right side and junior Andrew Kozusko was hit by a pitch. Galasso advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on an RBI single by Krally. Following a sacrifice bunt by Shaffer, Bayko drove home Kozusko with a sacrifice fly, 6-4.

The Lions added a run in the top of the seventh by junior Gary Gerhardt closed the door to earn his first save of the season.

Senior Erik Fichter (1-0) earned the win in game one, tossing 5.1 innings and scattering nine hits with four runs (three earned). He also walked two and struck out two. Gerhardt pitched the final 1.2 innings to earn the save, allowing two hits and one earned run with two walks and two strike outs.

Krally, Shaffer and Bayko combined to go 8-for-9 in the second game with a walk, two sacrifices, three RBI and four runs scored. Fearer drove in three runs in going 2-for-3 in the game.

In the second game, Behrend struck first with a pair of run in the top of the second inning before the Bearcats added a run in the third. Junior Zach Bush led off with a single up the middle and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior Nick LoNigro. Bush came home to score on an RBI single by classmate Brad Burkardt, 2-1.

SVC tied the game, 2-2, with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning, with Bush (who hit a one-out, double) scoring on an RBI single by Fearer.

Behrend opened up the game with six runs on five hits in the sixth inning before adding an insurance run in the seventh inning, 9-2.

SVC starter Mike Tedesco (2-2) was saddled with the loss, going 5.0+ innings and allowing eight hits and five runs (two earned), with three walks and two strikeouts. Sophomore Alex Kozusko and senior Kyle Anderson combined to throw the final 2.0 innings.

Burkardt and Bush each finished with two hits in the game, as Burkardt drove in a run and Bush hit a double and scored both of SVC's runs.

The Bearcats return to action on Monday, Apr. 30, hosting Westminster in a Presidents' Athletic Conference nine-inning game at 3:30 p.m.
