Westminster comes back to down SVC, 8-4

BOX SCORE

Saint Vincent was unable to hold a late inning lead over Westminster, falling 8-4 in a Presidents' Athletic Conference matchup at Bearcat Ballfield.

The Bearcats manufactured a run in the bottom of the first.  AJ Kavinsky walked to lead off, then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Joey FearerBrad Burkardt then singled home Kavinsky to make it 1-0.

Jared Haller started on the mound for SVC and was sharp in the early going, giving up just two hits through the first five innings.

The Titans managed to tie the game on an unearned run in the sixth, but the Bearcats stormed right back, with Grant Krally hitting a two-run double in the bottom of the inning to make it 3-1.

However, in the top of the seventh, Ty Miller tied the game with one swing, taking a Haller pitch over the left field fence with a runner on.  Later in the inning, a two-run single put the visitors in front 5-3, and they added another run after chasing Haller, making the score 6-3.

The Bearcats appeared poised to storm back in the bottom of the inning.  Kavinsky was hit by a pitch to lead off, and later scored on a double by Burkardt to make it 6-4.  After walks to Zack Galasso and Erik Fichter, Krally stepped up with two out and hit a grounder to the right side.  First baseman Tim Wiand and Krally were in a footrace to the bag, and the umpire ruled that Wiand got there first, ending the Bearcat rally despite controversy on the call.

SVC had one more chance in the ninth, loading the bases with one out, but Nick Grow got out of trouble and picked up the save for the Titans.

With the loss, the Bearcats fall to 10-11 in the PAC, while Westminster improves to 13-8.  Saint Vincent will close out the regular season with a three-game set against Grove City on the weekend, starting with a 9-inning contest in Latrobe on Friday at 3PM.
