The Saint Vincent Bearcats were unable to hold a lead in the late innings, falling to Penn State-Abington by a score of 10-7.
Penn State-Abington took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but SVC catcher
Gary Gerhardt prevented further damage with an unusual double play. With runners at first and third, Bearcat
Grant Krally fielded a sharply hit grounder at first and threw home to Gerhardt. The runner stopped halfway between third and home, caught in a potential rundown. Gerhardt chased the runner back toward third, tagged him for the out, then dove toward the third base bag, where the other baserunner was trying to go from first to third. Gerhardt tagged that runner out as well for the double play.
Saint Vincent then got a run back in the bottom of the inning, when
Grant Krally drove home
Tanner Master with a single.
In the second,
AJ Kavinsky singled home a run to tie the game, 2-2, then
Vince Murphy, who had singled, scored on the first of five Abington errors on the day, giving SVC a 3-2 edge.
Saint Vincent scored again in the third, with a Gerhardt single driving home
Jordan Britcher, who had singled, stole second and moved to third on a groundout.
The Lions added three runs in the top of the fourth, but SVC managed to get two back in the 5th.
Nolan Russell and Beamenderfer led off the inning with singles, then Gerhardt attempted to bunt the runners over, but reached on an error, loading the bases. Kavinsky drew a one-out walk off Ibrahim Moizoos to score one run, then
Tanner Master walked to bring home another run, making the score 6-5.
However, the Lions then tallied four runs in the top of the 8th inning, putting the game out of reach.
Steve Janik took the loss on the hill for the Bearcats, working 7.2 innings and striking out five.
Offensively, Russell had three hits, while Beamenderfer and Gerhardt added two each. Gerhardt and Kavinsky each drove in 2 runs.
Saint Vincent is now 1-3 on the year, and will face Beloit College on Thursday at 11:30AM. The game can be heard live on the SVC Sports Network.
