BOX SCORE - GAME TWO
BEAVER FALLS, Pa. (April 2) - Senior lefty
Jared Haller tossed his second-straight complete game to lead the Bearcats to a 5-1 win in game one, before Saint Vincent dropped the nightcap to host Geneva, 5-1, in a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader.
With the split, the Saint Vincent baseball team moves to 6-7 on the season and 3-1 in PAC play. Geneva ends the day with a 7-10 record overall and 2-3 mark in the league. The nine-inning rubber match of the season series is set for Wednesday, April 10 at Bearcat Ballfield with a 4 p.m. scheduled first pitch.
In the opener, SVC struck with two runs in the top of the second inning, providing Haller with all the support he would need on the day.
Tanner Master reached base to start the inning after being hit by a pitch and advanced to third on a double by
Andrew Kozusko. Both runners moved up on an RBI single by
Joey Fearer and Kozusko later scored on an RBI double by
Nick Beamenderfer.
The Bearcats added another pair of runs in the top of the fourth. With one out,
Vince Murphy doubled and moved up on a single by Beamenderfer. After the second out was recorded, SVC executed a double steal, with Murphy taking home and Beamenderfer heading to second and advancing to third on an error.
Jordan Britcher drove home the second run of the inning with an RBI single, 4-0.
Geneva scored its only run in the bottom of the fourth, but SVC answered with a run in the top of the fifth inning. Master walked to lead off and went to second on a failed pick-off attempt by the pitcher and later scored on a Murphy single.
Haller allowed just two hits in the final three innings to post the 5-1 win. He went 7.0 innings, yielding seven hits and one earned run while striking out eight and walking none.
Brad Burkardt, Kozusko, Murphy and Beamenderfer each finished with two hits apiece as the Bearcats posted 11 hits in the game. Burkardt is now seven hits shy of tying Danny Consuegra's all-time SVC hits record of 183 in his career.
In the second game,
Gary Gerhardt got the nod and went 5.0 innings, allowing seven hits, three runs (two earned) and surrendering two walks with two strikeouts.
The Golden Tornadoes struck for an unearned run in the bottom of the first and added an earned run in the bottom of the second, snapping Gerhardt's streak of not allowing an earned run at 26-straight innings.
The hosts added another run in the fifth and two more in the sixth before SVC got on the board in the top of the seventh.
Grant Krally walked to start the inning and advanced on a ground out by Master before scoring on an error during Kozusko's at-bat.
SVC recorded four hits in the game with Murphy, Master, Fearer and Beamenderfer notching one each.
Geneva's Mike Jeffreys, who entered the game second in the PAC in ERA and first in strikeouts, earned the win after going 6.0 innings and not allowing a run, while giving up four hits and striking out 11.
The Bearcats are set to return to Bearcat Ballfield on Friday, April 5, hosting Waynesburg in a nine-inning PAC game starting at 3 p.m.
