The Castleton State Spartans scored 16 runs on 13 hits to down the SVC Bearcat baseball team by a score of 16-8 in Hampton, VA.

The Bearcats took an early 1-0 lead in the first, tallying four hits off CS starter Adam Greenlese.  Greg Martin provided the RBI single.

However, the Spartans came back with five runs in the second and added four more in the third to take a commanding 9-1 lead.  SVC struggled in the field, as all five runs in the 2nd inning were unearned off starter Tyler Frankel.

Things appeared to turn around for the Bearcats in the middle innings.  In the fourth, Michael Vrbanic led off with an infield single, then moved to second when Jordan Britcher walked.  Collin Laguzza walked to load the bases with no outs, and Dustin Welsh singled home Vrbanic.  AJ Kavinsky then singled Britcher to make it 9-3.  Vince Murphy followed with an RBI single.  With one out, Ben Webb grounded out but a run scored, making the score 9-5.  Martin then reached on an error, scoring another run, followed by a Vrbanic RBI infield single - his second infield hit of the inning - to cut the margin to just two runs, 9-7.

After holding Castleton State scoreless in the top of the fifth, SVC appeared poised to complete the comeback in the bottom of the inning, loading the bases with no outs.  However, the Bearcats were unable to bring home any of the runners, and momentum shifted back to the Spartans.

Frankel (1-1) took the loss on the hill, working 2 2/3 innings.  TJ Fearon earned the win in relief for Castleton State.

For the Bearcats, the 12-hit offense was led by Martin's three hits. Kavinsky, Vrbanic and Welsh had two each.

SVC is now 2-4 on the year and will play a split doubleheader on Saturday in Hampton, VA.  At 9AM, SVC will face Tufts University, followed by an evening contest against the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
