Greg Martin had a strong outing on the hill, but the Bearcat bats were held to just five hits, as Tufts University defeated SVC by a 5-0 score in Hampton, VA.
Martin and Tufts' hurler Christian Sbily locked into a duel from the start, as the teams played scoreless baseball through four innings. In the top of the 5th, an infield single and a hit batsman put a pair of runners on for the Jumbos. After a sacrifice moved both runners ahead, Tom Petry hit a fly ball that hit the inside of the left field foul pole. The double scored both runners, giving Tufts a 2-0 lead.
The Jumbos manufactured an insurance run in the seventh on a single, stolen base, sacrifice bunt and sacrifice fly.
SVC was unable to score off Sbily or reliever Tom Ryan.
Chris Winkler and
Brennan Hoffer each had a pair of hits on the day, which included a rare 60-foot double by Hoffer, as his popup to the mound resulted in confusion among the infielders, and Hoffer never stopped running, easily taking second.
Martin worked 6 2/3 innings, scattering 8 hits.
Dustin Welsh and
Chris Storm each threw well in relief.
SVC is back in action at 6PM in the second half of a split doubleheader. The opponent will be the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
