Cramer tosses 1-hitter, SVC splits PAC doubleheader

BOX SCORE - GAME ONE

BOX SCORE - GAME TWO

Freshman Mike Cramer tossed a one-hitter as SVC won its Presidents' Athletic Conference opener over Westminster College by a score of 5-2.

Saint Vincent scored a pair of runs in the top of the second inning, when Jon White, Joey Fearer and Chris Winkler all singled to load the bases.  Tanner Master then reached on an error, scoring White with the game's first run.  Fearer later scored on a double play, giving SVC a 2-0 lead.

In the top of the fifth, SVC added another pair of runs when Laguzza singled and moved to third on a double by AJ Kavinsky.  Vince Murphy then singled home Laguzza, and Kavinsky scored on a single by Ben Webb.  Murphy later scored on an error.

It would prove to be more than enough for Cramer, who had a no-hitter into the sixth inning, facing the minimum number of batters through the first five.  He yielded only a hit batsman in the first inning, but erased the runner on a pickoff.

Two errors, one on either side of a double, provided the only offense for the Titans and the only blemish on Cramer's scorecard for the day.

He went the 7-inning distance, walking no one while striking out nine.

In the second game, SVC was down 1-0 in the third when Master reached on an error to lead off.  After a Laguzza single, Kavinsky advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt.  Murphy then reached on an error, scoring both runners.

After the hosts scored four runs in the bottom of the third to take a 5-2 lead, SVC came back with two runs in each of the next two innings to take a 6-5 lead.   Kavinsky reached on an error that brought home two runs in the fourth, while Fearer hit a two-run double in the fifth.

In the bottom of the fifth, however, the Titans came back with three runs, and held off a late challenge to win by a score of 8-7.

Saint Vincent is now 4-9 overall and 1-1 in PAC play on the season.  The Bearcats will complete their three-game season series against Westminster on Sunday with a single, 9-inning contest at 1PM at Bearcat Ballfield.
