BOX SCORE - GAME ONEBOX SCORE - GAME TWOPHOTO GALLERYThe Bearcats scored in all but one inning and pounded out 12 hits en route to a 12-5 win over Penn State-Altoona in game one of a non-conference doubleheader at Bearcat Ballfield, before posting a 4-3 victory in the nightcap.
In the opener,
AJ Kavinsky started the game with a double for the Bearcats. Â After
Vince Murphy was hit by a pitch,
Hunter Williams doubled home Kavinsky. Â Murphy later scored on a sacrifice fly by
Joey Fearer, making the score 2-0. Â Later in the inning,
Jon White doubled to score Williams.
After the Lions got a run in the top of the second,
Geo Muzika doubled to lead off the bottom of the inning. Â Kavinsky drew a walk, then both runners moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Murphy. Â
Ben Webb singled home both runners to increase the SVC lead to 5-1. Â
The Bearcats extended the lead in the fourth inning. Â Kavinsky and Murphy were hit by pitches to start the inning, then Webb reached on a perfectly placed bunt single. Â With the bases loaded, Williams was hit by a pitch to score Kavinsky. Â
Chris Winkler then drove in a pair of runs with a single, giving SVC an 8-1 lead. Â A sacrifice fly by Fearer, his second of the game, scored Williams to make it 9-1, en route to a 12-5 victory.
Kavinsky finished 2-for-2 with a walk, two doubles and four runs scored. Webb collected a pair of hits in going 2-for-3 with a team-best three RBI. Â Muzika went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. The trio of Fearer, Williams and Winkler each drove in two runs in the victory.
Freshman
Tyler Frankel earned the win to improve to 2-1 on the season. He went 5.1 innings, scattering 10 hits and four runs (all earned), while walking three and striking out one. Â
Luke Spisak worked the final 1.2 innings. Â
For Altoona, Pat McHenry hit a pair of solo home runs and was 3-for-4. Â Jared Daily took the loss. Â
Logan Madill got the Lions on the board in the top of the first in game two with an RBI double in support of starting pitcher Kurtis Krise. Â However, the lead only held up until the bottom of the second inning. Â
Greg Martin doubled to center field to lead off the inning, then moved to third on a groundout by
Jordan Britcher. Â
Jon White then singled up the middle, scoring Martin to tie the game. Â
Two innings later, Martin and White repeated their performance to give SVC the lead. Â Martin again doubled to lead off, this time down the right field line, then once again moved to third on a groundout by Britcher. Â White singled home Martin, giving SVC a 2-1 advantage. Â
Michael Vrbanic then followed with a single that moved White to third, and a wild pitch brought home White with the Bearcats' third run. Â On the play, Vrbanic hustled all the way to third, and was in scoring position for a sacrifice fly by
Joe Simsic that made the score 4-1.
SVC's
Michael Patsch threw well on the hill, but yielded a two-run home run by Madill in the fifth inning that cut the margin to 4-3. Â In the sixth,
John Malone came out of the bullpen for the Bearcats, and got some support from White in right field, who gunned out a runner trying to advance to third on a single. Â
In the 7th, after a leadoff walk,
Chris Storm came out of the bullpen and shut down the Lions, earning the save.Â
Patsch (1-1) gave up 7 hits in five innings, striking out three. Â Martin, White and
Collin Laguzza each had two hits.
Saint Vincent is now 6-9 on the year and has won three of its last four. Â The team heads to Waynesburg on Friday afternoon for a conference game against the Yellow Jackets.
