BOX SCORE - GAME ONE
BOX SCORE - GAME TWO
A last-inning rally in game one fell short, but the Bearcats responded in game two, earning a doubleheader split in Presidents' Athletic Conference play.
Waynesburg escaped with a 6-5 win in the opener, while SVC won the second game, 6-2.
AJ Kavinsky led off the bottom of the first with a single, then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Vince Murphy. A
Ben Webb groundout moved Kavinsky to third, and a single by
Greg Martin drove home the first run of the game.
In the top of the third, Waynesburg chased SVC starter
John Malone and eventually tallied five runs on four hits.
SVC got a run back in the bottom of the inning, as Kavinsky again led off with a single and later scored on a Martin single, making the score 5-2.
Waynesburg added what would prove to be a valuable insurance run in the top of the fourth off reliever
Chris Storm, with Jonathan Kletzli singled home a run to increase the lead to 6-2.
After
Dustin Welsh provided strong work out of the bullpen, shutting down the Jackets over the final 3 2/3 innings, SVC got a one-out single in the bottom of the 7th off the bat of
Collin Laguzza. Kavinsky then followed with his fourth hit of the game, a single that moved Laguzza to second. Pinch-hitter
Hunter Williams then got the Bearcats' first extra-base hit of the game off starter Luke Carter, a double that drove home Laguzza. Webb then flied out of center, scoring Kavinsky on the play and making it a two-run game, 6-4. Martin then singled home Williams to cut the gap to just one, 6-5. Pinch-runner
Luke Fox stole second to put the tying run into scoring position, but Waynesburg reliever Derrick Zavatsky got a groundout to end the game.
Kavinsky went 4-for-4 and scored three runs, while Martin was 3-4 with 3 RBI. Laguzza had a pair of hits. Malone worked 2+ innings and took the loss (1-1).
In game two, Kavinsky reached base to start the game for the 10th time in 15 games in the leadoff spot, getting hit by a pitch. After
Jordan Britcher walked, Webb singled up the middle, scoring Kavinsky to put the hosts in front 1-0 for starter
Mike Cramer.
The bottom of the 4th saw the Bearcats add to their lead. Webb led off with a single, and Martin followed with a double into the gap in left-center. A passed ball allowed Webb to score, making it 2-0. With one out,
Jon White singled home Martin, and
Aaron Burger followed with a double that moved White to third. Fox then drew a walk to load the bases.
Geo Muzika then laid down a perfect suicide squeeze bunt, beating out the play for a single that scored White. An errant throw allowed Burger to score, giving SVC a 5-0 lead.
Cramer lost his shutout bid in the sixth, when the Jackets tallied a pair of runs, but he returned in the 7th to finish the complete game, giving up six hits, walking none, and striking out two on the day.
Webb and White each went 2-3 wit a run scored and an RBI.
SVC is now 2-3 in the PAC, while Waynesburg ends the series with a 2-1 record. The Bearcats will host Geneva College on Tuesday at 1PM at Bearcat Ballfield in another PAC doubleheader.
