The Saint Vincent baseball rallied from behind four times to record a 12-10 victory over the Gwynedd-Mercy Griffins in Auburndale, FL.
Jon White and Colin Laguzza provided plenty of offense, while
John Malone worked 3 1/3 scoreless innings of relief to tally the pitching win as the Bearcats evened their record to 2-2.
The Griffins took their first lead of the day in the top of the first, with an RBI triple making it 1-0. Saint Vincent came back to tie the game in the bottom of the first, when
AJ Kavinsky led off with a double, moved to third on a sacrifice by
Vince Murphy, then scored when
Ben Webb's grounder was misplayed for an error.
Â
In the second, GMC tallied four runs to take a 5-1 lead, but SVC starter
Michael Patsch settled down and kept the opponents off the scoreboard in the third and fourth.
Â
In the bottom of the inning, the Bearcat bats responded. With one out,
Jordan Britcher reached on an error, then advanced on a single by
Tanner Master.Â
Joey Fearer then singled, moving Britcher to third.Â
Michael Vrbanic grounded out, scoring Britcher, to make the score 5-2. Laguzza then doubled, clearing the bases and making the score 5-4. After Kavinsky and Murphy were hit by pitches back-to-back, White singled home a pair of runs to give SVC the lead, 6-5.
Â
The lead would not last long, however, as the Griffins scored two in the top of the fifth to take a 7-6 lead, but the Bearcats once again fought back. In the bottom of the fifth, Britcher led off with a single, and Master followed with a bunt single to put two runners on for Fearer. The senior singled to left, scoring Britcher and forcing GMC to go to their bullpen. Vrbanic then attempted to bunt the runners ahead, but a throwing error by the third baseman brought Master home with the go-ahead run. Laguzza then hit a sharp grounder that kicked off the third baseman's glove right to the shortstop, who made a nice play to get Laguzza at first, but Fearer scored to make it a 9-7 Bearcat lead.
Â
Once again, the Griffins answered quickly, scoring three times in the top of the sixth off reliever
Tyler Frankel, taking advantage of a Bearcat error. Malone came on to get the Bearcats out of the inning, down 10-9.
Â
Fearer got the fourth – and final – rally of the game started in the bottom of the 7
th with his third single of the game. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Vrbanic, then scored on a Laguzza single that tied the game at 10.
Â
Kavinsky singled to put runners at first and second, then Murphy hit into a fielder's choice that erased Kavinsky but put runners at the corners. After an uncontested steal of second by Murphy, White came up with the game-winning hit, a single that drove home both runners.
Â
Malone took care of the rest, yielding just one hit in the final three innings.
Â
Saint Vincent pounded out 15 hits on the day, including three each by White and Fearer. White and Laguzza each had four RBI.
SVC returns to action on Thursday at 11AM, facing the University of Mount Union.Â
