SVC jumped on starter Caleb Kilgore early in game one, as
AJ Kavinsky was hit by a pitch to open the bottom half of the first, then
Joey Fearer reached on a bunt single.
Ben Webb singled home Kavinsky, and Fearer later scored on a groundout by
Jon White to make it 2-0
After Geneva scored two in the top of the second, the Bearcats added three more runs in the bottom of the 2nd on just one hit, four walks, a wild pitch, and a sacrifice fly.
In the third inning, the Golden Tornadoes, got to SVC starter
Tyler Frankel, scoring four runs on three hits and taking advantage of two errors to take a 6-5 lead.
Mike Panchik then took over on the hill and shut down Geneva through the middle innings, while the Bearcats came back to retake the lead.
With one out in the bottom of the 3rd,
Tanner Master walked and advanced when
Vince Murphy laid down a bunt single. With no one covering third, Master broke for the base and a throwing error allowed him to score, tying the game at 6-6. After Fearer walked, Webb hit a two-run double that would prove to be the game-winner, as SVC took an 8-6 lead.
Control problems by the Geneva pitchers resulted in 15 walks in the game and three hit batsmen, as SVC totaled 16 runs on 11 hits. The teams combined for 9 errors in the game.
Panchik (1-0) earned the victory with 3 1/3 scoreless innings of relief work for the Bearcats. Fearer went 2-for-2 at the plate with three walks, scoring three runs. Webb went 2-3 with 4 RBI, while Laguzza was 2-3 and drove in three runs.
In game two, Geneva scored a pair of runs in the top of the 2
nd off SVC's
Greg Martin. The Bearcats got a run back in the bottom of the inning when
Hunter Williams was hit by a pitch to lead off and later scored on a single by
Jon White.
In the fourth, SVC broke the game open with six runs. After the first two batters were retired, Murphy drew a walk, then advanced on a single by Kavinsky. Fearer doubled home both runs to put SVC in front, 3-2. Webb followed with an RBI double then scored on a single by Williams.
Jordan Britcher followed with an RBI single. The final run of the inning scored when
Jon White, who had singled, was caught in a rundown on a pickoff play, allowing Britcher time to score from third, putting SVC ahead, 7-2.
The hosts added their 8th run of the game on a Britcher single that brought home Webb, who had singled and stolen second.
Martin (1-3) went the distance for his first collegiate pitching victory, giving up six hits, walking three and striking out five.
Saint Vincent is now 4-3 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference, while Geneva drops to 2-5. Up next for the Bearcats is a non-conference game against Pitt-Greensburg on Thursday afternoon at 3PM at Bearcat Ballfield.
