SVC swept at Bethany by identical 6-5 scores

BETHANY, W.Va. (Apr. 6) - The Saint Vincent baseball team dropped a pair of Presidents' Athletic Conferences contests by identical 6-5 scores at Bethany.

With the losses, the Bearcats fall to 9-13 on the season and 4-5 in the league. The Bison improve to 10-5 overall with a 5-2 record in PAC action.

In game one, SVC held a 4-1 lead before Bethany tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. The Bearcats plated a run in the top of the first when Vince Murphy reached on an error, went to third on a base hit to right field by Ben Webb and then scored on a wild pitch.

In the third, the Bearcats added a pair of runs when AJ Kavinsky walked to lead off and advanced on an infield single by Murphy. Kavinsky scored on a triple by Webb, but Murphy was thrown out at the plate trying to score from first. A sacrifice fly by Greg Martin brought home Webb and gave SVC a 3-1 lead. The Bearcats tacked on a run in the top of the fifth after Kavinsky walked with one out and went to third on a single by Murphy before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Webb, 4-1.

The Bison plated three runs in the home half of the fifth to tie the game and then added a pair in the bottom of the sixth to take a 6-4 lead into the final frame. In the seventh, Kavinsky again walked with one out and went to second on a fielder's choice by Kavinsky when the pitcher committed an error during Murphy's at bat. With the bases loaded later in the inning, Jordan Britcher drew a two-out walk to bring SVC within one, but Zac Edmiston recorded a strike out to end the game for Bethany with a 6-5 final.

Joey Fearer earned a no-decision after starting and working 4.1 innings, allowing just four hits and four runs (three earned) with five walks and four strikeouts. Dustin Welsh suffered the loss after yielding a pair of runs on a hit in 0.2 inning. Chris Storm worked a scoreless final inning, forcing a pair of ground outs and a fly out.

In the second game, Bethany scored five runs in the bottom of the second inning to jump out to a 5-0 lead. SVC battled back to tie the game with a run in the third, one in the sixth and three in the top of the seventh.

A sac fly by Fearer scored SVC's first run and a sac fly by Hunter Williams plated the second run which came in the sixth inning.

Webb and Martin led off the seventh with singles to right and Michael Vrbanic drove in Webb on a pinch-hit, RBI single to left. A sac fly by Tanner Master scored another run and Murphy closed the scoring with a game-tying sac fly to left.

Bethany then scored a run in the bottom of the seventh after a double with two outs was followed by an intentional walk and RBI single.

John Malone took the loss, working 1.2 innings and being responsible for the runner on second that scored the game-winning run. Mike Cramer received a no-decision after working 5.0 innings and giving up nine hits and five runs (three earned).

The two teams will wrap up their three-game season series with a single, nine-inning game on Monday, April 7 at 3 p.m. at Bearcat Ballfield.
