BOX SCORELATROBE (Apr. 8) - The Saint Vincent baseball team was unable to hold a lead through five innings as it dropped a 14-10 Presidents' Athletic Conference decision to Bethany at Bearcat Ballfield.
With the loss, the Bearcats fall to 9-14 on the season and 4-6 in the PAC. The Bison, who are in third place in the conference, win the season series for the third-straight year and improve to 11-5, 6-2 in the league.
Trailing 1-0 heading to the bottom of the first inning, SVC posted three runs.
AJ Kavinsky singled to lead off and stole second before scoring on a double by
Vince Murphy. A ground out by
Ben Webb moved Murphy to third and he came in to score on an RBI ground out by
Joey Fearer. With two outs,
Tanner Master singled up the middle and
Jordan Britcher walked.
Chris Winkler drove in Master for the inning's final run with an RBI single to center, 3-1.
Bethany tied the game with two runs in the top of the third but SVC responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half to re-take the lead. Fearer walked to lead off and went to second when Master reached on a dropped fly ball by the left fielder. With two on, Britcher singled through the right side, and Master scored on a double play.
SVC added to the lead in the fourth with a run after Kavinsky (walk) and Murphy (infield single) each reached base to start the inning. Following a sacrifice bunt by Webb, Fearer drove home Kavinsky with a sacrifice fly, 6-3.
The big inning for the Bison came in the top of the sixth when the guests plated seven runs on five hits. The first seven Bethany hitters reached base either via single or walk in the frame as the score was 10-6 when the dust settled.
SVC was able to answer right back with a four-spot in the bottom of the inning to tie the game, 10-10. With one out, Webb and Fearer drew back-to-back walks. Following a pitching change, Master singled through the left side, bringing home Webb. With two outs, Winkler doubled down the left-field line scoring Fearer and
Hunter Williams capped the rally with a two-run single.
Bethany took the lead for good in the top of the seventh with a run, and added three more in the top of the ninth as SVC was unable to plate another run before dropping the 14-10 decision.
Saint Vincent used six pitchers in the contest.
Dustin Welsh, the fourth pitcher of the day, suffered the loss, dropping to 0-1 on the season with 3.0 innings of relief. He allowed four hits and four runs (three earned) with two strike outs and a walk.
Greg Martin started and worked five-plus innings, yielding 11 hits and six runs (four earned) while striking out three and walking one.
Cody Gross earned his first win of the year for Bethany with 3.1 innings of scoreless relief, posting two strike outs and just one hit.
Offensively, SVC recorded 11 hits as Kavinsky, Murphy, Master and Winkler recorded multi-hit days. Fearer, Winkler and Williams each drove in two runs.
SVC wraps up the season series with Geneva on Wednesday, Apr. 9 with a 4 p.m. game in Beaver Falls. The Bearcats swept the doubleheader in Latrobe last week by scores of 16-8 and 8-2.
