Darius Brown had a 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, and sophomore transfer
Shavonta Craft had a pair of rushing scores in his Bearcat debut, but Waynesburg prevailed thanks to a second half comeback.
Waynesburg took the early lead just under five minutes into play, as Carter Hill hit Bernie Thompson on a 31-yard pass to give the Jackets a 7-0 advantage.
With 3:16 left in the first half,
Darius Brown intercepted a Hill pass near midfield, returning it to the Waynesburg 23. On the first play of the drive,
Matt Deakins threw a short pass to Craft, who worked his way to the one-yard-line, and Craft carried the ball in on the next play to tie the game, 7-7, after the extra point by
Morgan Porter.
After holding the Jackets and causing turnover on downs early in the second quarter, the Bearcats embarked on a 12-play, 58-yard drive that stalled at the Waynesburg 11, but Porter hit a 28-yard field goal to put SVC in front, 10-7.
The hosts came back with a scoring drive of their own, capped by a 2-yard run by Willie Leavell to go in front, 14-10 with 2:30 left in the half.
Scott Lewis then kicked off and the ball was misplayed by Brown, who had to chase it down at his own 1-yard-line. Brown was then able to pick up key blocks and work his way through the entire Waynesburg coverage team, going 99 yards for the score, putting SVC in front 17-14.
The Bearcats had another chance to score before the half ran out, as
Derek Yanosick forced a fumble on Porter's kickoff.
Darrell Burrell recovered at the Waynesburg 43, but Porter's 30-yard field goal attempt as time expired sailed wide to the right.
Waynesburg (2-0) retook the lead on the first possession of the second half, with a Jake Forsythe 2-yard touchdown run, then held the Bearcats to force a punt on the next possession. The Jackets then put together another scoring drive to go ahead 28-17 just past the midway point of the third quarter.
Andy Borgen then came on at quarterback for SVC and started a drive with a 16-yard run, then connected on a 28-yard pass to
Matt Duffey. Craft then completed the drive with a 15-yard run to the 2-yard-line, and later scored from the 1 to cut the deficit to just four, 28-24 to end the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Bearcats were unable to move the ball, and the hosts put together a four-play, 43-yard scoring drive that made it 35-24 with 8:53 to go. Neither team managed to score the rest of the way.
Craft led the offense with 90 yards on 22 carries and a pair of touchdowns, while Borgen carried the ball 5 times for 24 yards.
