BOX SCOREPHOTO GALLERYMatt Loftis tied the game with a single in the bottom of the 9th, and
Aaron Burger hit a game-winning walkoff single in the 10th, lifting the Bearcats to a 7-6 victory over Geneva College on Senior Day in Latrobe.
Geneva jumped to a 4-0 lead, scoring two runs in the first and two more in the third off SVC starter
Steve Janik. Â But as Janik settled down, the Bearcat offense went to work.
In the bottom of the third,
Hunter Williams doubled home a pair of runs to make it 4-2. Â In the fourth,
Brennan Hoffer singled and stole second, then scored on a
Luke Fox single to cut the deficit to just one.
In the fifth, Williams singled with one out, then moved to second on a
Chris Winkler single. Â Following a pitching change, Hoffer walked to load the bases, and Loftis followed with a game-tying single. Â Fox later hit a sacrifice fly that gave the hosts a 5-4 lead.
The score remained that way until the 9th. Â After retiring the first two batters, Janik yielded a pair of singles and was lifted for reliever
Mike Panchik. Â After both runners moved up on a wild pitch, Geneva's Ryan McGonigle hit a two-run single, putting the Golden Tornadoes a 6-5 lead.
In the bottom of the 9th,
Ben Webb singled to lead off, then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Williams. Â Winkler followed with a single to left, moving Webb to third. Â That set the stage for Loftis, who hit a sharp two-out grounder right back at pitcher Jeff Parker. Â The ball caromed off his leg right to the glove of third baseman Zack Ackerman. Â Loftis, hustling down the line, beat the throw to first as Webb scored, tying the game and sending it to extra innings.
Dustin Welsh came out of the SVC bullpen and held the GT's scoreless in the top of the 10th. Â Fox then stepped up to lead off the bottom of the 10th, and hit a deep fly that went over the head of the right fielder for a triple. Â Burger then sent a Parker delivery up the middle for the game winning single.
Welsh (2-0) picked up the win in relief. Â SVC's 16-hit attack was led by Fox and Hoffer with three hits each. Â
The two teams will meet on Saturday (April 18) in Beaver Falls for a doubleheader.
