BOX SCORE - GAME TWOPHOTO GALLERYAfter dropping game one by a score of 13-5, the Bearcats fought back to score a pair of runs in the bottom of the 6th inning in game two, earning a 10-8 victory.
Luke Fox led off the bottom of the first with a bunt single for SVC, then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Aaron Burger. Â
Ben Webb then singled home Fox to put the hosts in front, 1-0. Â The Jackets then scored three runs in the top of the second off SVC starter
Michael Patsch, but SVC came back with a run in the bottom of the inning. Â With two outs,
Matt Loftis reached on a bunt single and moved to second on an errant throw. Â Burger then singled home Loftis to cut the deficit to 3-2.
After Waynesburg went in front 4-2, SVC came back to tie the game in the bottom of the third. Â Webb led off with a single to right, and
Chris Winkler walked with one out. Â
Tyler Frankel then singled to load the bases, and Loftis doubled just inside the first base line, scoring two runs to tie the game.
Waynesburg, however, tallied seven runs on six hits to put the game out of reach.
Patsch worked the first four innings for SVC, yielding seven hits and four runs. Â
Dylan Pietrantoni took the loss, working 1/3 of an inning. Â
Dustin Welsh worked a scoreless inning and two-thirds in relief. Â At the plate, SVC had 14 hits, led by Loftis (3-4). Â
John Malone, Webb and Winkler each had two hits.
In game two, the Bearcats jumped to an early 3-0 lead when
Eddie Kilkeary hit his fifth home run of the season, a three-run shot in the bottom of the first. Â He scored
Dylan Kugler, who had singled, and Webb, who had walked.
Waynesburg got a run back in the top of the 2nd off SVC starter
Steve Janik, but the Bearcats increased the lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the inning, when Winkler walked, moved to second on a
Matt Whittaker sacrifice, then scored on a Loftis double.
In the third, Malone led off with an infield single, then moved to second on a groundout by Webb. Â Kilkeary singled to right, moving Malone to third, and Burger brought home the run with a sacrifice fly. Â After Kilkeary stole second, Winkler drove him in with a single, making it 6-1. Â Whittaker then doubled home Winkler, giving SVC a 7-1 lead going to the fourth inning.
After Waynesburg scored a pair of runs in the visitors half of the 4th, SVC got an insurance run when
Braden Hoffer singled to lead off, then moved up 90 feet on a Kugler sacrifice. Â Hoffer moved to third on a wild pitch, then scored on a Malone groundout to the right side, making the score 8-3.
However, in the 6th inning, Waynesburg stormed back, tallying five runs on four hits to tie the game at 8-8.
In the bottom of the sixth, Kugler doubled to the left field fence with one out, and Pietrantoni walked. Â Webb then hit a popup to shallow center field. Â The second baseman, shortstop and center fielder all converged but the ball dropped in. Â However, Kugler had to stay close to the bag at second, and Waynesburg shortstop Nathan Mori was able to get the force out at third. Â Kilkeary then drew a walk to load the bases with two outs, setting the stage for Burger. Â The junior responded with what would prove to the game-winning single to left, scoring Pietrantoni. Â SVC got an insurance run when a wild pitch plated Webb, making it 10-8.
Pietrantoni, who had come on in relief, threw a scoreless top of the 7th to complete a rarity, getting the decision in both ends of the doubleheader. Â The victory in game two was his first collegiate pitching win.
As in game one, SVC had 14 hits, with five players having two each. Â Kilkeary had three RBI, while Burger drove in two.
Saint Vincent is now 9-11 overall, 4-6 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference. Â Waynesburg is now 9-12-1 overall, 7-3 in the PAC.
Weather permitting, the two teams will square off in a 9-inning game at Waynesburg on Wednesday, April 8 at 3PM.
