Bearcats Fall Twice in Doubleheader at W&J

WASHINGTON, Pa. (Mar. 27)- The Saint Vincent Baseball team fell twice to Washington and Jefferson in a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon.

The Bearcats (3-15, 1-3 PAC) held a comfortable 9-3 lead in game one, before a three run seventh inning and four-run ninth inning helped the Presidents (8-7, 2-0 PAC) walk the Bearcats off, handing them a 10-9 defeat. In game two, the Bearcats once again jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but the Presidents came from behind as the Bearcats fell 8-5.

GAME ONE- W&J 10, Saint Vincent 9

The Bearcats led 9-3 after six innings, before the Presidents scored seven runs between the seventh and ninth innings, including four runs in the ninth as the Bearcats were defeated in the opener of the doubleheader.

Billy Perroz led the Bearcats with three hits in his five at-bats, including a solo homerun. Five Bearcats recorded two hits in the win.

Dylan Schmude went 2-5 with two runs scored and L.J. Evans also went 2-5 with a solo homerun as well.

Derek Hald, Mario Disso, and Devin Bonine all added two hits as well with Disso hitting a solo homerun.

Saint Vincent starter, Tyler Dancu pitched 6.1 innings, giving up six runs (five earned) on nine hits. He struck out one and walked three as well.

Jeremy Kreuzwieser took the loss on the mound, pitching 0.2 innings, giving up two runs on four hits in the loss.

It was a quick start for the Bearcats in the top of the first. Schmude led the inning off with a base hit to right field on the first pitch of the game. Hess followed with a walk and after a strikeout, Perroz reached on an infield single to load the bases.

Nicklow followed with a two-RBI single to right field, scoring both Schmude and Hess to give SVC a 2-0 lead.

Dancu set the Presidents down in order in the bottom of the inning and the Bearcats added another run in the second. Disso led the bottom of the inning off with a deep solo-homerun to right field, increasing the SVC lead to 3-0.

Dancu stranded a President in scoring position in the bottom of the second inning and the Bearcats once again scored for the third straight inning in the top of the third.

Just as Disso did in the second inning, Perroz led the inning off with a solo shot to right field. The long ball continued to work for the Bearcats as Evans hit a solo shot with one out in the inning, increasing the Bearcats lead to 5-0.

The Presidents got on the board in the bottom of the third, scoring three runs, two of which came with two outs, cutting into the Saint Vincent lead at 5-3.

The Bearcats got two of those W&J runs back in the top of the fourth. First, Evans singled in Perroz and Hald followed with a two-out RBI single, scoring Evans to give Saint Vincent a 7-3 lead.

After holding the Presidents scoreless in the bottom of fourth, the Bearcats struck for two more in the top of the fifth. Amatucci grounded out to third base and after a throwing error, Bonine came around to score to give the Bearcats an 8-3 lead.

Saint Vincent wasn't done in the inning. The Bearcats continued to capitalize on Presidents errors as Nicklow reached on an error by the third basemen, scoring Schmude as the Bearcats led 9-3.

Saint Vincent went scoreless in the sixth and seventh innings. The Presidents on the other hand scored three more in the seventh after a scoreless sixth cutting the SVC lead to 9-6.

The Bearcats and Presidents both went scoreless in the eighth inning.

W&J scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth to walk off the Bearcats, handing SVC the 10-9 defeat.

Saint Vincent scored nine runs on 16 hits, committing one error. The Presidents on the other hand scored ten runs on 14 hits, committing four errors.

GAME TWO- W&J 8, Saint Vincent 5

The Bearcats jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but a three run fifth inning and five run sixth inning handed W&J the 8-5 win and SVC's second defeat of the afternoon.

In game two, Nicklow and Disso each totaled two hits apiece to lead Saint Vincent. Jacob Auld, Perroz, and Schmude all totaled a hit as well. Perroz's hit was a solo homerun in the first inning.

Michael Klingensmith took the loss on the mound, pitching five innings, giving up eight runs (five earned), while striking out four and walking two.

Cody May, Andrew Stano, Jacob Hess, and Andrew Root all tossed scoreless innings in relief for Saint Vincent.

The Bearcats once again took an early lead, scoring two first inning runs. Perroz hit his second homerun of the day, this one a two-run shot, giving the Bearcats 2-0 lead.

After a scoreless second inning from both teams, Saint Vincent added another run in the third inning on a Nicklow RBI-single, scoring Schmude, increasing the Bearcats lead to 3-0.

In the fourth, W&J tied the game up with three runs in the bottom half of the inning.

Both teams went scoreless in the fifth inning, before Saint Vincent regained the lead with two outs in the sixth. Disso continued his impressive day with a two-out RBI-double to left center, scoring Evans the whole way from first base as the Bearcats led 4-3.
The Saint Vincent lead did not last long. In the bottom of the sixth, the Presidents scored five runs in a long half inning, where W&J had five hits.

Jacob Auld cut into the W&J lead for the Bearcats with a solo homerun in the eighth as the score was 8-5, still in favor of W&J.

SVC was set down in order in the ninth as the Bearcats were defeated 8-5 in the finale.

Saint Vincent will enjoy the next few days off before returning to action on Tuesday, April 2, traveling to Pitt-Greensburg for a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Bobcat Field on Tuesday.
