The Saint Vincent baseball team lost to the Newport News Apprentice School in game one of a split doubleheader by a 6-1 score, then lost a heartbreaker to Tufts University, 2-1 in 11 innings in the second game.
Jared Haller started strong for SVC against NNAS, tossing three scoreless innings. Meanwhile, the offense was hot and cold...getting runners on base but stranding five in the opening third of the game.
The Builders then tallied a pair of runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth off Haller. The lone SVC run came in the 8th inning, when
Nolan Russell doubled, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Joey Fearer.
Brad Burkardt had three hits in the game, while
Grant Krally went 2-4. Haller (0-2) worked 6 innings and took the loss, while
Eamon Kelly pitched well in relief, working two scoreless innings and not allowing a single base runner.
Taylor Gomer worked six scoreless innings for the win for the Builders (15-3). Cody Seals had a pair of doubles and four runs batted in.
In game two, the Bearcats and Tufts University battled into extra innings, but SVC lost by a score of 2-1.
Gary Gerhardt threw 10 innings for the Bearcats, striking out 9 and giving up just one unearned run.
Alex Kozusko (2-1) took the loss in relief.
SVC scored in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly by Russell. The Jumbos tied the game in the second, and neither team was able to score again until the 11th frame.
Vince Murphy had two hits for the Bearcats, as the team was held to just five singles in the game.
Saint Vincent is now 3-5 on the year and will face the Apprentice School on Sunday at 12Noon.
