Baseball rallies for win at Grove City, 8-5

GROVE CITY, Pa. (April 23) - The Saint Vincent baseball team scored seven runs in the final three innings to rally for an 8-5 win at Grove City in Presidents' Athletic Conference action.

The win keeps the Bearcats atop the PAC baseball standings with a 10-4 league mark, while improving them to 14-12 overall. Grove City drops to 4-16 this season and 3-11 in league play.

SVC starter Gary Gerhardt went the distance, allowing eight hits and five runs (three earned) in 9.0 innings of work. The righty struck out four and walked one in improving to 4-4 on the season.

The host Wolverines struck first, plating three runs off in the bottom of the second inning. The Bearcats manufactured a run in the top of the third when AJ Kavinsky walked to lead off and advanced on a single by Vince Murphy. A fly out by Brad Burkardt moved Kavinsky to third and he later scored on an RBI single by Joey Fearer, 3-1.

Grove City stretched the lead to 4-1 with a run in the sixth inning before Saint Vincent surged for four runs in the top of the seventh to take a 5-4 lead.

Murphy led off with a single and advanced when Burkardt reached on an error. Grant Krally was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs and a walk to Fearer plated Murphy. Andrew Kozusko delivered a two-run single and Jordan Britcher collected an RBI on a ground out, 5-4.

SVC added on with two runs in the top of the eighth when Kavinsky, Murphy and Burkardt led off with consecutive singles before Fearer delivered a one-out, RBI single. A sacrifice fly by Kozusko played Murphy and SVC built its lead to 7-4.

A solo homer in the bottom of the inning brought Grove City within two runs, 7-5, but Michael Vrbanic scored when Burkardt reached on an error, 8-5.

Murphy led the Bearcats at the plate, going 4-for-6 with two runs scored. Fearer and Kozusko each finished 2-for-4 with three RBI in the win and Kavinsky went 2-for-5 with two runs scored.

SVC hosts Bethany at Bearcat Ballfield for a PAC doubleheader at 1 p.m. Thursday.
