LATROBE (May 3) - The Saint Vincent baseball team battled back from a 4-0 deficit to tie the game, 4-4, but was unable to secure the victory falling, 6-4, to Thiel in the final home game of the 2013 regular season.
With the loss, the Bearcats drop to 18-16 overall this year and 14-8 in Presidents' Athletic Conference action. Thiel improves to 22-16 and 15-7 in the PAC.
SVC fell behind, 3-0, after a three-run third inning by Thiel. A double and single started the inning before a sacrifice fly scored the opening run. A two-run homer capped the scoring and put the guests ahead.
Thiel added a run in the top of the fifth inning to take a 4-0 lead.
Saint Vincent rallied to tie the game with four runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Andrew Kozusko started the rally with a single and
Jordan Britcher walked to put two on.
Grant Krally then delivered a single to left field to load the bases before
Nolan Russell launched a bases-clearing triple to the right-center gap.
Tanner Master followed Russell with a high fly ball behind second that fell in, scoring the game-tying run, 4-4.
In the top of the 10th, Thiel starting pitcher Nick Rossmiller, who remained in the game to play third base after being taken out to start the eighth inning, hit a towering, two-run homer to provide the game-winning runs.
Joey Fearer (2-2) suffered the loss, throwing 9.0+ innings. He allowed seven hits and five runs (four earned) with six strikeouts and three walks.
Eamon Kelly worked the final 1.0 innings, responsible for one run on the homer by Rossmiller.
The two teams wrap up the series and regular season with a doubleheader tomorrow in Greenville, Pa., with first pitch slated for 1 p.m.
