ALTOONA, Pa. (April 19) - The Saint Vincent College baseball team overcame an early deficit and rallied for an 8-7 nonconference win over Penn State Altoona in game one, before taking game two 16-10 for the doubleheader sweep.
The pair of wins extends the Bearcats winning streak to five games, which matches their longest such streak of the season. SVC now sits a game over .500 at 16-15 overall.
After spotting Altoona a 4-0 lead in game one, Saint Vincent came back with a three-spot in the top of the second.
Hunter Williams and
Chris Winkler both collected RBI singles while
Matt Loftis used a sacrifice fly to bring Williams home, cutting the deficit to 4-3.
Altoona scored a single run in the fourth, before
Ben Webb singled to right field to score
Eddie Kilkeary, bringing the deficit back to a single run at 5-4.
Facing a 6-4 deficit, SVC finally tied the game in the 6th inning. Loftis tripled to center field to score Winkler, before
Aaron Burger singled to score Loftis and even the score at 6-6.
The host Lions countered with a run in the bottom of the frame and were just three outs from the game one victory. However, Williams used an infield single to score pinch runner
TJ Kuny to tie the game and force extra innings.
Jason Vater brought home
Brennan Hoffer on a sacrifice bunt in the eighth inning and SVC recorded the final three outs for the victory.
Dustin Welsh picked up the win in relief, pitching 2.1 innings of scoreless baseball. Welsh improved to 3-0 on the season.
Game two was a wild back and forth contest, with both teams scoring three runs in the first and two runs in the third inning. With the score tied at 5-5, SVC brought six runs home in the fourth for an 11-5 lead. SVC held the lead for the remainder of the game.
Holding a 13-10 lead entering the final inning, the Bearcats added three runs of insurance to close out the scoring. Williams, Burger and Kuny all chipped in an RBI in the frame.
Five Bearcats recorded at least two hits in game two, including outfielder
Luke Fox, who went 3 for 3 with two runs scored out of the leadoff spot. Burger had a game-best four RBIs in the back end of the doubleheader.
Sophomore
Tyler Frankel picked up his second victory of the week on the mound. Frankel allowed six runs over five innings of work to improve his season record to 3-1.
Saint Vincent returns to action when they travel to Kentucky to face PAC leader Thomas More on Saturday, April 25. The Bearcats and Saints will play a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
