BOX SCORE - GAME ONEBOX SCORE - GAME TWOThe Bearcat baseball team's comeback fell short, as they dropped game one of a twinbill on the road at Thomas More by a score of 8-7. The Bearcats dropped another tight contest in game two, by a 2-1 score.
SVC took a 4-0 lead in the top of the first. Â
Luke Fox led off with a single, then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Aaron Burger. Â A throwing error allowed Burger to reach first safely, putting two runners on for
John Malone, who singled home Fox with the game's first run. Â With one out, the runners moved up on a passed ball, and
Ben Webb followed with a two-run single. Â Webb later scored on a groundout by
Chris Winkler.
In the bottom of the second, the Saints came back with three runs, then added four more in the third to take a 7-4 lead.
In the fourth, another TMC run put the hosts in front 8-4, before the Bearcats starting fighting back. Â In the fifth,
Hunter Williams reached on an error, then moved up on a single by Winkler. Â
Brennan Hoffer doubled, scoring Williams, making it an 8-5 game.
In the sixth, Fox walked and stole second, then Burger drew a walk. Â Malone singled to load the bases, and a run scored on a passed ball to cut the gap to two runs. Â An error brought home Burger to make it a one-run game, but the Bearcats were unable to bring home the tying run.
Steve Janik (4-3) went the distance for SVC, yielding 13 hits, walking one and striking out five. Â Malone led the offense with three hits, while Hoffer had two. Â
After playing through five scoreless innings, Saint Vincent got on the board first in game two, scoring a single run in the top of the 6th inning.
Eddie Kilkeary stroked a one out double before moving to third on a single by Webb. Burger then brought home Kilkeary on a successful bunt attempt.
TMC wasted little time countering back, scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame. Down to their final three outs, SVC tried to rally. Hoffer singled to start the inning, before giving way to a pinch runner
Noah Shahen.
Matt Loftis bunted the runner to second and then Shahen went to third on a wild pitch.
With a runner at third and less than two outs, it set up a golden opportunity to tie the game. Unfortunately, Thomas More induced an infield pop out and caught the next Bearcat batter looking to end the game.
Kilkeary led the offense by going 2 for 2 with a pair of doubles.
Dylan Pietrantoni took the tough luck loss, giving up two earned runs over 5 plus innings of work.
The losses snapped the Bearcats five game winning streak. SVC sits at 16-17 overall and 8-11 in league play. Thomas More remained in first place, improving to 16-4 in PAC play and 24-8 overall.
The two teams are scheduled to conclude the series tomorrow (Saturday) with a single nine inning contest. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
