WASHINGTON, Pa. (May 11) - The Saint Vincent baseball team hit into five double plays and fell, 8-5, to third-seeded Thomas More to be eliminated from the 2013 Presidents' Athletic Conference baseball championship.
With the loss, the Bearcats end the season with a 19-20 record, while the Saints advance to the PAC Championship round against top-seeded host, Washington & Jefferson.
The Bearcats opened the game with three runs in the top of the first inning.
AJ Kavinsky led off with a double down the right-field line and went to third when
Nick Beamenderfer reached on an error and went to second.
Brad Burkardt followed up with a double down the right field line to plate both runners. Burkardt moved up on a fly out by
Andrew Kozusko and scored on an RBI ground out by
Jordan Britcher.
In the bottom of the first, a walk and hit batter put two on for the Saints and Travis Miller connected on a three-run homer off of starter
Joey Fearer to tie the game, 3-3.
Thomas More added a run in the bottom of the second, 4-3. SVC answered with a run in the top of the third after Beamenderfer doubled to lead off and went to third on a single by Burkardt. Beamenderfer scored on an RBI fielder's choice by Kozusko, 4-4.
TMC scored once in the bottom of the fourth and twice in the bottom of the fifth to take a 7-4 lead.
SVC scored its final run in the sixth inning.
Nolan Russell reached on a throwing error with one out and then advanced to third on a double by
Vince Murphy.
Tanner Master plated Russell with an RBI single to left field, 7-5.
Thomas More added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh for the 8-5 margin.
Fearer worked 4.2 innings as the starter, allowing nine hits and seven runs (six earned) while striking out three and walking five.
Alex Kozusko and
Gary Gerhardt worked 1.2 innings of relief apiece, with the latter making his third appearance in three days.
Kavinsky, Beamenderfer, Burkardt and Master each finished with two hits, with Burkardt driving in a pair.
