Kilkeary, Janik lead SVC to victory

BOX SCORE

Freshman Eddie Kilkeary hit a pair of home runs, and Steve Janik worked 7 strong innings on the mound as SVC defeated the Milwaukee School of Engineering by a score of 13-2 in Winter Haven, FL.

The Bearcats found themselves behind 2-0 after an inning, as the Raiders got off to a quick start with a pair of hits and a hit batman.  SVC got a run back in the top of the second, as Chris Winkler drew a walk, advanced on a single by Kilkeary, then scored on a single by Brennan Hoffer.

The score remained 2-1 until the top of the fifth, when Joe Simsic led off with a single.  Two batters later, Ben Webb took over at first after a fielder's choice, and Dylan Pietrantoni kept the inning alive with a single.  Winkler singled home Webb to tie the game, sending Pietrantoni to third and advancing to second on the throw.  Matt Loftis then delivered what would prove to be the game-winning hit, a two-run single.  Kilkeary doubled home Loftis to make it 5-2 in favor of the Bearcats.

In the sixth, SVC added two more runs.  Luke Fox laid down a bunt single to open the inning, and Simsic was then hit by a pitch.  Aaron Burger attempted to bunt the runners ahead 90 feet, but a throwing error by the first basemen allowed Fox to score and moved Simsic to third.  After Simsic was picked off third, Burger stole second and scored on a single by Pietrantoni.

An inning later, Loftis led off with a single and Kilkeary launched his first collegiate home run, a two-run shot that ran the lead to 9-2.  Meanwhile, Janik was in command on the hill, working seven innings, keeping MSOE off the scoreboard after the first.

In the top of the 8th, Webb was hit by a pitch, and Pietrantoni doubled to move Webb to third.  Winkler singled home Webb to make it an 10-2 game.  Loftis then grounded out, scoring Pietrantoni and setting the stage for Kilkeary, who followed with his second home run over the left field fence, making the score 13-2.

Mike Panchik pitched a scoreless 8th inning, and the game was stopped due to the tournament's 10-run rule.

On the afternoon, Kilkeary, making his first start as a Bearcat, went 4-for-5, scored twice, and drove in five runs.  Loftis finished the day 3-5 with 2 runs scored and 3 RBI, while Winkler was 3-4, scored three times and drove home two runs.  Pietrantoni also had a three-hit day, going 3-5 and scoring twice.  In all, SVC had 18 hits in support of Janik (1-1), who scattered 7 hits, walked one and struck out three.

Saint Vincent is now 2-3 on the season and will face Clark University (MA) at 1PM on Friday afternoon in Winter Haven, FL.
