PHOTO GALLERYThe Grove City Wolverines invaded Latrobe and captured both ends of a Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader by scores of 9-6 and 10-1 over the Bearcats.
The visitors took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second off SVC starter
Steve Janik, taking advantage of two errors to plate a pair of unearned runs. Â In the bottom of the second, SVC got a run back, loading the bases with no outs on singles by
Ben Webb and
Eddie Kilkeary, followed by a walk to
Chris Winkler. Â Webb later scored when
Brennan Hoffer hit into a fielder's choice. Â SVC reloaded the bases but couldn't score, keeping it 2-1 after two innings.
Saint Vincent tied the game in the third, as
John Malone reached on an error and later scored on a Kilkeary single.
In the fourth, Grove City tallied three runs on five hits, to take a 4-2 lead, and the advantage eventually grew to 9-2 after six innings. Â In the bottom of the 7th, SVC fought back. Â Hoffer led off with a single, and pinch-hitter
Joe Simsic followed with his first career home run, sending a pitch over the left field fence to make the score 9-4. Â
Aaron Burger then singled, and pinch-hitter
Matt Whittaker was then hit by a pitch to put two runners on. Â
Dylan Pietrantoni drew a walk to load the bases, still with no outs. Â Webb flied out to center, scoring Burger, and Kilkeary followed with a fly out that brought home Whittaker to make the score 9-6, but the Bearcats were unable to keep the rally alive.
Janik (3-2) took the loss, working 3 2/3 innings. Kilkeary was the lone Bearcat with two hits, going 2-3 with a pair of RBI.
In game two, Pietrantoni and Grove City starter Cameron Lawson dueled early. Â In the top of the fourth, Grove City got on the board, rallying with two outs for four consecutive hits, scoring three runs, which would end up being more than enough for the victory. Â They added two runs each in the fifth and sixth, and three more in the 7th. Â The lone Bearcat run came in the fourth, as SVC took advantage of two walks and an error. Â
The Bearcats managed just four hits in game two, with Malone going 2-4. Â Pietrantoni (0-3) worked into the fifth inning and took the loss.
Saint Vincent is now 8-10 overall on the year, 3-5 in the PAC. Â Grove City improves to 8-11, also 3-5 in the conference. Â After a break for the Easter holiday, the Bearcats return to action with a home doubleheader on Tuesday, April 7, against Waynesburg.
