Lightning struck twice for the Bearcats in their conference opening doubleheader against Westminster, twice rallying from a one-run deficit in the final inning to earn wins by scores of 4-3 and 3-2.
In game one, SVC trailed 3-2 entering the top of the 7th inning, when
Luke Fox singled with one out and stole second. With two down,
Ben Webb doubled to left center, scoring Fox to tie the game. Â
Eddie Kilkeary then singled home Webb to put the Bearcats in front for the first time in the game.
Westminster had scored twice in the fourth to break a scoreless tie and added an insurance run in the fifth, but the Bearcats fought back in the top of the sixth. Â After the first two outs, Webb singled to start the first rally, moving to second when Kilkeary was hit by a pitch. Â After
Greg Martin walked to load the bases,
Bobby Swartwout singled home SVC's first run. Â
Aaron Burger was then hit by a pitch, plating Kilkeary to make it 3-2 and set up the 7th inning heroics.
In the bottom of the 7th, Martin then came out of the bullpen and struck out the side to end the game, his fourth save of the season. Â
Tyler Frankel worked the first six innings and picked up the win, moving to 4-0 on the season.
Webb was 3-for-4 while Swartwout was 2-3.
In game two, Webb hit a solo home run in the top of the fourth to break a scoreless tie. Â However, in the fifth, the Titans tied the game, scoring a run off SVC starter
Dylan Pietrantoni. After giving up a pair of hits to start the sixth, Pietrantoni yielded to Martin, but a single drove home the go-ahead run for Westminster. Â
Once again down to the final inning, SVC got a leadoff double from Martin. Â Pinch runner
Braden Hoffer moved to third on a groundout by Swartwout. Â
Chris Winkler then hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Hoffer and tying the game. Â That brought up
Aaron Burger, who hit a solo home run to left center give the Bearcats the lead.Â
Alex Augustine worked a scoreless seventh for his first save.
The Bearcats are now 8-5 overall, 2-0 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference. Â The team will host Westminster on Thursday (March 24) in a single, 9-inning contest at Bearcat Ballfield. Â
